When adopting are cats already cat litter box trained? Also do they take care of any shots and other issues before taking the cat home?

Really depends on the cat. Those coming from hoarder situations or bad breeders where they may have been caged and/or didn’t have litter boxes obviously won’t be. Just read the info on the cat’s cage and ask as many questions as you want.
What a shelter does to the cat depends on the shelter. The one I volunteer with will spay/neuter, get the cat up to date on shots, deflea, deworm, test for FIV and FeLv and microchip – all for an adoption fee of around $100.
What a shelter WON’T necessarily do is check for other things – ear mites, tapeworm, upper respiratory infections, etc. So ALWAYS take a cat to a vet as soon as you adopt it and be prepared to spend at least $100 for a checkup, the cat’s rabies shot and any other issues it might have.
